Florida lawmakers pledge money for spring training teams

Posted: Updated:

State legislators are signing off on a plan to use state money to help pro baseball teams even if the team moves from one Florida town to another.
House and Senate budget negotiators on Monday night agreed to a plan that calls for spending $3.3 million a year starting in 2015 for at least the next 30 years.
A key element in the proposal would call for the state to spend $50 million for a stadium used by two Major League Baseball teams.
Rep. Ritch Workman, R-Melbourne, conceded this was aimed at helping pay for a proposed stadium that would be used by the Houston Astros and Toronto Blue Jays in Palm Beach Gardens. The Astros currently train in Kissimmee while the Blue Jays train in Dunedin.
