NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A man carjacked a taxi cab in New York City before crashing the vehicle in Leonia, New Jersey, said police.

Brian Ambrose, 40, is accused of punching the cabbie in the face and dragging him out before stealing the taxi at Eighth Avenue and West 23rd Street at about 7:20 a.m.

"A female in the backseat noticed something was wrong with the man and she jumped out. The carjacker went north on the West Side Highway," said Leonia Police Lt. Thomas Rowe.

After crossing the George Washington Bridge into Palisades Park and Leonia, the driver jumped a sidewalk on Broad Avenue and crashed into a supermarket and traffic signal.

The GPS location from the cab was provided to police by the Taxi and Limousine Commission and pinpointed the driver's location to Broad Avenue and Crescent Street.

Amrbose attempted to flee on foot but was tackled by officers and arrested, said Lowe.

Two Palisades Park police officers suffered minor injures.

A sergeant with the Leonia Police Dept. was injured while processing Ambrose after he allegedly head-butted the officer, said Lowe.

A Point Pleasant resident frustrated with what he sees as slow action on the part of the Borough Council on making the town safer for pedestrians and bicyclists has started a petition urging the council to act. The petition, posted on change.org, said that while the council passed a Complete Streets ordinance last year and commissioned a report, little of substance has been done, Hagemeyer says. The council meets tonight at 7 at the municipal building.

Workers continue making repairs after a New Jersey Transit train derailed on the Montclair-Boonton line. NJ Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder says passengers on that line are facing delays of up to 20 minutes in both directions on Wednesday because the railroad can only use one track. The train derailed between the Bay Street and Walnut Street stations in Montclair on Tuesday afternoon. No one was injury and passengers were safely transferred from the train.
