For the first time in quite a while, Jerry Nugent can smile. That's because his daughter is doing well after major surgery.
Ireland Nugent was badly injured in a lawn mower accident last week, and doctors had to remove both her feet this week. However, her father told FOX 13 Wednesday that she's now eating, talking and doing very well.
"The joy that I'm feeling is just overwhelming – from where I was to where I am," Jerry Nugent said.
Nugent said Ireland was able to drink apple juice and have a banana. She even ate some fruit loops. Two days ago Ireland was still recovering from surgery and was sedated, but now she's alert.
Jerry even said she was able to give her father a kiss – something that meant the world to him.
"This morning I was trying to get her to say I love you," he said. "She's kind of a little out of it, but I said ‘Can daddy have a kiss?' And she turned her head toward me and raised her face and I was able to kiss her lips."
FOX 13's Stef DiPietrantonio will have more reaction from the family tonight at 5.
