Warmer temperatures bring termites

Posted: Updated:
MARIETTA, Ga. -

Spring has arrived, and the warm weather it brings is like a wake-up call for termites.

A Marietta homeowner came home to hundreds of clipped wings on his basement floor. The wings once belonged to termites. That's when he realized he had a problem with his home, and he called a pest control company.

"I saw them jiggling there, all these termites they were coming in, a flying out of there," said the home owner.

Chris Ashley of Truly Nolan Pest Control Company says April is swarming season for termites.

"April is normally their mating season. What happens is as it starts to warm up, you get colonies that are somewhere between the age of 5 to 7 years old. They start producing swarmers," said Ashley.

Termites, though small, can do damage to your home. Constantly looking for their food source of wood, they'll chew through whatever they have to find it.

Clipped wings by doors and windows are a sign you have a problem. Chris says to also look for signs in the corners of your room near the foundation, and mud tunnels.

"It's going to be a red clay mud tunnel about the width of a pen," said Ashley.

Damage can range from several hundred dollars to several thousand. Newer houses aren't immune. The best advice is to stop the problem before it starts.

"Get your house inspected at least once a year. Do it preventative, so that you can get the coverage before you have damage that you have to pay for. Let those companies pay for that," Ashley said.

While many companies will do a termite inspection for free, preventative treatment can be costly, starting at several hundred dollars. Most companies charge by the linear foot of your home.
