A vehicle carrying four theft suspects struck a concrete barrier and flipped over Sunday night in Tampa.
Three of the four people were pronounced dead at the scene; the fourth was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with serious injuries.
According to a Tampa Police Department report, they were traveling east on West Columbus Dr. in a Jeep at a high rate of speed just after 8 p.m.
The driver of a Toyota pick-up truck told investigators he could see the SUV coming up from behind and just managed to get out of its way before it hit the wall in front of the Marti Cemetery.
Authorities say the suspects had just committed a crime at the 7-Eleven location at 3434 West Columbus Dr.
"They had stolen some beer from the store and were attempting to get away," said TPD Public Information Officer Andrea Davis. "Several people in the parking lot were yelling at them as they drove off."
The names of the deceased have not been released pending notification of next of kin. Detectives say two of them were male and the other female; the injured suspect is also a male.
The driver of the Toyota was not hit or injured.
West Columbus Dr. from MacDill Ave. to Himes Ave. was closed for several hours as detectives collected evidence and spoke to potential witnesses.
So far no charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
