A career criminal released from state prison in December was arrested Saturday night on first-degree murder charges.
Sylvester Johnson was booked into the Pinellas County Jail just before midnight. He is being held without bond in the death of 75-year-old William David Casey - a registered sex offender.
According to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report the victim and the suspect were neighbors at the Palace Mobile Home Park in Lealman. Investigators say Casey was killed late Wednesday night or early Thursday morning.
Deputies were dispatched to the victim's residence just after 11 a.m. Thursday when a friend of Casey's called 9-1-1 when he found the body. The unidentified person was bringing food to Casey when they made the gruesome discovery.
The victim was stabbed multiple times in the upper body the report states. Detectives and crime scene investigators matched Johnson to the crime through fingerprints.
Robbery appears to have been the motive as Casey's wallet was missing. So far investigators have been unable to locate the weapon as the investigation continues.
Johnson, 60, has been in and out of jail most of his adult life. At the time of this incident he was already on felony probation for a conviction out of Pinellas County for failing to register as a career criminal.
Johnson has an arrest record that goes back more than 30 years. He's served five stints in state prison on a variety of charges including sexual battery, burglary, kidnapping and dealing in stolen property.
Casey made headlines last summer when he was arrested by Largo Police on sex and child pornography charges. He was adjudicated guilty on the charges last month and sentenced to two years of community control probation.
