UPDATE: Detroit police say Robert Peoples was found walking outside by a citizen who turned him over to Sixth Precinct early Friday morning. He was transported to a local hospital and is said to be in fair condition.

DETROIT (WJBK) -- The family of an elderly Detroit man is worried for his safety.  He has dementia and walked away from his home on Thursday.

Robert Peoples is 74 years old.  He was confused and disoriented and left his home on Strathmoor heading toward Seven Mile.

"He went towards the front door," said caregiver Theresa Griffen.  "He turned around, he raised his hands and he hit the door, and when he hit the door, I hit the door running behind him."

"The last I [saw] him is when he was going down Seven Mile towards the Pizza Hut."

"Just ran out the door with her," wife Arthella Peoples said.  "Followed as far as I could go.  I had to come back because I can't walk too [well]."

"He does not know this area at all," she added.

"I have to even remind him where the restroom is," Griffen said.  "Dementia can cause him to be a danger to himself because of his forgetfulness, and I'm very concerned, and I just pray to my Heavenly Father that he makes it back home."

Peoples is 5'10" tall, weighs about 150 pounds and has gray hair.  He was wearing a gray hat and a dark blue sweatshirt.  He was also wearing dark gray slacks and brown shoes.

Police are aware.  His friends, family and caregivers are out looking for him.  He is not dressed for the weather.  If you see him, help him and call police.
