A Historic 'Parent Trigger' Vote

Posted: Updated:
Los Angeles, CA -

(FOX 11) There were piñatas and face painting, balloons and lots of laughter as parents cast a vote for change at 24th Street Elementary School in Los Angeles.

"I am so happy to be here, because today is the day," said Erica Valente, the mother of a first grader. "We've waited for this day for seven years."

Valente is among 386 parents who signed a petition to make changes at the school under the state's "parent trigger" law. That law allows parents to submit a petition signed by a majority to force a school district to make changes to administration or operators at any school languishing in the bottom ten percent of the state.

The law is relatively new and this is the first time that a petition was submitted to a district that didn't put up a fight.

"The leadership of the LAUSD under Superintendent John Deasy deserves a tremendous amount of credit for not seeing parent empowerment as a threat but as an opportunity," said Ben Austin, the executive director of Parent Revolution, a grassroots coalition of education reformers that helps parents organize.

"This is an opportunity to transform our schools rooted in what's good for kids, not what's good for the adults at the school. These parents along with the district administrators are creating an example for the rest of the country to follow to transform a systemically failing school and be a model for the nation."

Today's election results will determine which public charter school organization will be brought in to help run the school.
