Hakken family: A timeline of events

Posted: Updated:

The Hakken boys were taken from Josh and Sharyn Hakken after the couple was arrested in Louisiana in 2012.

The Slidell, Louisiana Police Department said "Mr. and Mrs. Hakken were acting in a bizarre manner that alarmed officers." They said they found narcotics and weapons in the motel room, and they arrested Joshua Hakken on drug charges. The kids went into foster care.

Authorities put out a statement saying the family went to an "anti-government rally."

Despite repeated requests for clarification, no law enforcement agency involved in the case has ever provided more specific information about when and where this rally took place, and what they meant by "anti-government."

Two weeks later, Joshua Hakken showed up at the foster home with a gun demanding the return of his children. He left when the homeowners called 911.

Last week, a judge gave custody of the boys to Sharyn's Hakken's mother -- that's when things started to get really ugly.

On Wednesday, police say Joshua Hakken tied his wife's mother up at her home in south Tampa and took off with the boys.

It took her about 45 minutes to get loose and call 911.

That 45 minutes gave Josh and Sharyn Hakken the head start they needed.

They headed for John's Pass.

Thursday evening, more than 24 hours after the abduction, the Hakken's black pickup truck was spotted in the parking lot at the John's Pass marina.

On Friday, surveillance pictures were made public that showed the Hakkens on board a sailboat named "Salty."

The surveillance pictures were snapped at a private pier in Madeira Beach.

One of the residents who lives along that pier says he saw the Hakkens get on the boat and sail away.

Monday night, investigators got word that the Hakken's had docked in Cuba.

Today, a CNN crew took video of the boat at a marina in Havana.

The CNN reporter approached the man on the boat, who confirmed he was Josh Hakken.

He says he asked Sharyn Hakken if the boys were okay, and she said "yes."

Late Tuesday afternoon, Cuban authorities said they would turn the family over to U.S. authorities.

The Hakkens have been arrested and booked in Hillsborough County.
