DDS continues to seek improvement in services

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Last year, the Department of Driver Services made big changes to what documents you need to apply for, or renew, a license. Now, you have to show proof of identity, two proofs of residency, and your social security number.

The first few months of the year are the busiest ones at driver services. After 9/11, new security measures are making the process safer, but a little more of a headache.

The last thing Anita Campbell wanted to do on her birthday was sit at the Department of Driver Services. But to renew her license, that's exactly what she needed to do and at first, she was missing a few things.

"I did have to come leave and come back because I had more documents that I needed," said Campbell.

After she had her paperwork, she says the process was pretty painless.

"I guess people anticipate spending at least two hours at a DMV in order to get any process done. But, I was only here for about 45 minutes," Campbell said.

"We are studying it, evaluating it all the time and we're listening to our customers concerns," said Susan Sports with the Department of Driver Services.

Last year, as a part of a federal homeland security initiative, Georgia began requiring more original documents and an in person visit to renew a license.

"It verifies identification to help prevent identity theft or fraud," said Sports.

"I don't see a problem with it. I can understand why all the necessary documents would be needed," said Campbell.

The agency says it's working. It has already serviced one million customers with the new system. Last month, officials from Kansas were in Georgia to see how everything was running and to see a location in action.

"It just makes a safer nation for us all share ideas, and our process -- what worked and what didn't work," Sports said.

At some offices, they've installed iPads and computers so you can print proof of residency, like a bill, if you forget one.

"We've identified that that's the largest group of customers that are making a return trip," said Sports.

"That's a good idea because it will eliminate the inconvenience of having to leave, get out of line," said Campbell.  "Within another eight years, I will have forgotten about this visit and it shouldn't be that bad the next time around."

Officials say they're still not 100 percent happy with where the wait times are, and they're still working on relieving congestion.  More documents are expected to be added to the website to help speed things up. They encourage you to check the wait times on their website, before you head to a location.
