TAMPA (FOX 13) -

He's only 18 years old but he's already achieved a greatness few people have. A.J. Dinicola a student at Gaither High School is the first in Hillsborough County to win the state wide music composition contest for high school musicians.

Winning the Filmore competition as the state's top high school band composer was a shock to A. J. Dinicola, but not his peers, and not his Band Director Brian Dell.

"He's the first student in Hillsborough County, obviously he's the first student in Gaither to do it to."

Brian Dell is his band director at Gaither.

"These types of students come around with this talent level that have many, talents in different areas. They come around every four, five, six years," Dell said.

A.J. says music is in his blood.

"I was raised in a really musical family, my grandfather was a musician, my dad a musician, my first bed that I remember sleeping in was under a music console," he said.

He loves composing, so the hard work was a joy.

"Two, three months just to write it and then the last, it's been over a year since we been practicing it and adding more and more to the piece."

And his band director Brian Dell is convinced we'll be hearing his work on the radio in the future.

"He has about 10 charts out he plays a drum set and guitar does the vocals and does the bass part as well. So he does his own tracks and recordings and stuff to so he's very talented".

"I think I'm a product of a lot of luck and a lot of other people's hard work and belief that I become something." A. J. said.

After high school, A.J. would like to attend a musical college and work on his craft, and follow in his musical family's footsteps.
