Victim of alleged baseball bat assault talks about ordeal

Posted: Updated:

A local woman says she is lucky to be alive after being the victim of a brutal case of domestic violence. Nicole Hernane says that she needs expensive surgery just to feel normal again.

Police in Coweta County say Hernane's boyfriend of eight years, David Bennett, beat her in the head and face with two baseball bats and then left her for dead, bleeding and alone all night back in February.

"I never thought he would do something like that. I was with him for eight years," Hernane said.

Hernane only remembers part of the violent attack that doctors say should have killed her.

"He had the bat in one hand. He had his hand wrapped around my pony tail…I was hollering and screaming. I was trying to get someone to hear me," Hernane said.

Hernane was left blind in one eye and has metal plates in her head. She has already been through multiple surgeries and racked up half a million dollars in medical bills -- some of which her insurance won't cover.

"They said this one was mangled behind my back and the bone was sticking out and my eye was hanging out and my face was bashed flat in. I got two metal plates," Hernane said.

Insurance won't pay for reconstructive surgery or physical therapy.

There are other costs as well. While Hernane was in the hospital, someone stole all her clothes and belongings out of her home.

"I'm in the hospital fighting for my life and people are just like I'm already dead," Hernane said.

Friends have set up a fund at Wells Fargo where people can donate to help.

Hernane is hoping other women in abusive relationships will see what happened to her and leave.

"It doesn't get better and it's not going to stop and it's not going to go away. It's just going to get worse," Hernane said.

You can make a donation at any Wells Fargo location under Nicole Hernane's name.
