Superstorm Sandy

Brighton Beach rebuilding noise

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Many are calling it a construction nightmare in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. They say work on the boardwalk and beach is going 24 hours a day -- and they're fed up.

Residents in Brighton Beach told us Friday night's work is nothing compared to what they've been living with for the past week at least. They say crews have been working literally around the clock. The New York City Parks Department is trying to get the beach and boardwalk ready in time for Memorial Day weekend. Hurricane Sandy caused major damage there. According to the Parks website, that work includes demolishing some damaged lifeguard and restroom stations so they can replace them.

People in the Oceana Condo Complex say they're upset not only over the 24/7 noise but that a new, much larger comfort station than the original is going up in front of the complex, which will block the water view from Brighton Beach Avenue. They filed a court injunction Friday to try to stop it.

But a judge ruled in favor of the city.

In a statement, the city Law Department said in part: "We are very pleased the court is allowing this vital construction project to proceed... [The stations] have all required permits... and underwent a public comment period. They are specially designed to withstand future hurricanes."

Those here say they understand all this work needs to be done, but they maintain the city never communicated any of this would be taking place.

We also reached out to the Parks Department regarding the overnight construction but did not hear back. Residents from the condo complex are preparing for a demonstration on Sunday.

A NYPD plan intended to better connect with the community seems to have backfired a bit. The police department asked its twitter followers to share pictures of themselves with New York City police officers using the hashtag "myNYPD." Some did share nice pictures, but others not so much. Some of the first pictures posted showed regular citizens standing with very friendly looking police officers.
