TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A Tampa fighter pilot was killed when his F-16 jet crashed in Afghanistan this week, the Department of Defense said Friday.

Capt. James Michael Steel, 29, was on his final approach to land after a routine air support mission around 11 p.m. when it lost contact with the control tower, according to a spokesperson at Air Force Central Command.

The F-16 crashed near Bagram Airfield. There appeared to be no enemy activity in the area.

The DOD says he was assigned to the 77th Fighter Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.
