Manatee students chosen to go to White House

BRADENTON (FOX 13) -

Five kids from Manatee County are on their way to the White House to help first lady Michelle Obama plant a vegetable garden.

The kids are from B.D. Gullett Elementary School – one of only four schools chosen across the country. The school is the only one from Florida to get invited.

"I could not believe my eyes," one student said. "I was just reading the paper like oh my God I'm so excited!"

The White House says it was chosen for offering students healthy food choices. The kids grow their own vegetables in earth boxes and then take them to the cafeteria where they are prepared for school lunches.

Teachers say Gullett uses the gardening to teach students about nutrition.
