Heavy smoke from brush fire blankets Weeki Wachee area

Posted: Updated:

Authorities say they have contained a large brush fire in Hernando County, but it is still blanketing a large area with smoke.

The blaze began north of the Weeki Wachee area. The view from SkyFOX shows heavy smoke pouring over neighborhoods and choppers dousing flames with buckets.

Initials reports said the fire was burning in the 9000 block of Glen Lakes Blvd. near the Glen Lakes Golf Course.

The fire reportedly started as a controlled burn that jumped the line.

FOX 13 meteorologist Paul Dellegatto said winds in the area are moving from northeast to southwest.

No structures were burned, and no homes have had to be evacuated, according to Don Ruths, a public information officer with the Division of Forestry's Brooksville office.

In the meantime, though, the smoke is creating hazy conditions for residents.

"It looks like snow flurries between the black and white fly ash," said George McVicker.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office says it is safe for anyone who evacuated the area to return home.

The Florida Forest Service will continue to monitor the area for flare-ups. They say to expect smoke to remain in the area for hours.
