NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Christians around the world are marking Good Friday, the day Christ was crucified, with reflection and a procession of the stations of the cross.

For Christians, the walk is symbolic and reflects the procession made by Jesus as he carried a cross to the site where he was crucified.

Prayers, chanting and hymns were used which is held every Friday during the Lenten season.

In New York City, the walk was led by Timothy Cardinal Dolan.

A large group gathered behind Cardinal Dolan Friday morning at East 47th Street and 2nd Avenue and walked to East 42nd Street and the Church of the Holy Cross.

Around the world, hundreds of pilgrims have walked the traditional procession in Jerusalem's Old City.

They hoisted wooden crosses, chanting prayers to mark the crucifixion of Jesus.

Today's procession ended at the ancient Holy Sepulcher church.

Later today there'll be a Mass in Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity.
