Lakeland police officer injured during traffic stop

LAKELAND (FOX 13) -

A Lakeland police officer was injured, when he was dragged by a suspect's car during a traffic stop.

It happened Thursday afternoon while officers were speaking to the suspect in his car when he fled, dragging one of them along with him.

At some point, the officer was able to grab his gun and fired one shot into the vehicle.

The suspect crashed his car into three vehicles in parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy on George Jenkins Blvd., and came to a final stop against a light pole.

The officer was thrown from the vehicle when it crashed.

He was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center to get checked.

According to the Lakeland Police Department, his injuries are non-life threatening.

The suspect has been identified as James Houston Black Jr.

He was also taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center as a precaution.

Black was not shot during the incident.

Officer Michael Glass, who has been with the department since July 2008, will be placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
