Sugar Demons: What It Takes To Back Off The Sweets

You try to cut back but constantly fall off the wagon, wrecking your diet, your waistline and maybe even your health.

As FOX 29's Joyce Evans reports, the problem might come down to what's called a sugar demon.

Experts believe some people are addicted to sugar, almost like being addicted to drugs.

So, how can we rebuild our will power and self control? We've put together some tips below.

The times that we eat:

Dietician Emily Rubin says eating sugary foods on an empty stomach makes it difficult to stop. When you get home after not having eaten in a while, Rubin recommends you keep the things you shouldn't be eating hidden.

Trade the sugary foods for something else:

Health experts recommend you trade a food with a large amount of sugar content for something that's high in energy. For example, trade the ice cream for high energy fruits - you can even dump them into yogurt, but make sure to check the labels, you want low fat or no fat brands with more protein.

Give it time:

Cutting back doesn't happen overnight, health experts recommend you be patient and give yourself time to adjust.

You can find more information in the study mentioned in Joyce Evans' story, or learn about participating in one on Dr. Michael R. Lowe's website.
