A driver is accused of shooting at two young women after a traffic spat in Cherokee County.
Best friends Jordyn Pierce and Sarah Ashe were heading to a friend's house Tuesday night when they came upon a slow moving black Lexus.
"We went around him and he ended up getting right on our bumper," Pierce said.
The 20-year-olds say the Lexus kept following, hanging close as they tried to get away.
"He started flashing his lights got even closer than he started running stop signs just to keep up with us," Ashe said.
They say the apparently enraged driver followed them to the cul-de-sac where their friends live. As they tried to circle around the street to leave, they say the driver fired at them.
"I could see the light coming from the gun...Apparently he was reloading and I just asked him, 'Did you really just shoot at me,'" Ashe said.
After the gun misfired twice, everyone left the scene.
Deputies arrested 42-year-old Richard Wilt a short time later nearby. They confiscated a .45 caliber handgun. They also located one spent casing and two unfired rounds at the cul-de-sac. They also found small amounts of marijuana, scales on oxycodone pill and open containers of beer in his vehicle, according to Lt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office.
Wilt now faces DUI, drug and firearms charges including making a terroristic threat.
His wife, who is pregnant, had no comment.
Ashe and Pierce say they feel sorry for Wilt's family but hope he gets jail time for his alleged road rage .
"If his gun had not misfired we would either be dead or seriously hurt," said Pierce.
Wilt was taken to the Cherokee County Detention Center and is being held on a $60,000 bond. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
Public records show that Wilt has a previous DUI from several years ago.
