When a Tampa woman rented a car from Enterprise, she got a hidden extra: A fully loaded snub-nosed revolver. The gun was under the driver's seat, within reaching distance of where her granddaughter had been sitting.
"It could have slid out from under my seat and into the back seat, and she could have picked it up and either one of us could have got shot," Linda Ashmore exclaimed.
Ashmore discovered the gun when she was cleaning the car so that she could return it. At first, she thought it was a toy. Then reality set in.
On Wednesday, a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputy examined the car and took the gun as evidence. Deputies are now looking for the gun's owner by calling the people who have rented the car before.
The car rental company issued a written statement:
"On return of each vehicle, our procedure is to clean everything, including checking under seats, in the glove compartment, in the center console and in door compartments. The safety of our customers is our top priority. And we are investigating what went wrong in this case. We will revisit with our service agents the proper procedures to make sure this doesn't happen again. We have a very formal training process, instructing all of our employees on the proper cleaning of a vehicle, including inspections for customer belongings. We are very sorry this happened and are working to make sure it doesn't happen again," said Laura Bryant, with Enterprise Holdings.
