William Rice, once in charge of investigating homicides for the Detroit Police Department, is now charged with two counts of perjury in a murder case.

Prosecutors say it all stems from testimony Rice gave under oath in 2009 involving an alibi for Devontae Sanford.

At age 14, the learning disabled Sanford, pleaded guilty to murdering four people on Runyon Street in 2007.

But later, convicted contract killer, Vincent Smothers, confessed to the crime.
William Rice, who was dating Devontae's Aunt, Cheryl Sanford, testified Devontae was with him and couldn't have pulled the trigger.

But investigators say that was a lie and Rice perjured himself twice.  They also say it's a life felony in a capital case.

In the case involving Rice and Cheryl Sanford, it's alleged the two were involved in mortgage fraud and narcotics.  It's huge cases his attorney says Rice is handling with as much composure as possible.

"It's trying as you know. Whenever he leaves out of his house there are cameras and media everywhere so he's taken it one day at a time continuing to live his life and try not to worry about it too much, " said Tiffany McEvans, Rice's Attorney.

Rice remains free on bond.
