They were a common sight around Tampa during the Republican National Convention: Bay Area law enforcement received 200 bikes at a cost of $1,597 for each one.
The convention is over, but the bikes are here to stay. Tampa, Hillsborough County, St. Petersburg, Plant City, Tarpon Springs, Pasco County, Hernando County, Temple Terrace, Manatee County and Gulfport all received bicycles through the federal grant.
The bikes were built specifically for police use with lights, sirens, special shocks, larger tires and a first aid kit.
Law enforcement really like them because they can patrol areas where cars can't go and it makes officers more approachable.
