Study: Facebook Boosts Self-Confidence

Posted: Updated:

While most people use Facebook to keep in touch with friends and update people on their lives, a new study suggests the social networking site may also help boost a person's self-worth.

The study was conducted at Cornell University and involved eighty eight students. Researchers found that people's Facebook profiles offered reassurance about their self-worth, because they allow users to display their most valued personal traits and relationships.

Study co-author Jeff Hancock says that although Facebook can be viewed as a time sink, the research shows that, "it can be a psychologically meaningful activity that supplies a sense of well-being at a relatively deep level."

The findings appeared in the March issue of the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin.
