Michigan State Police searched the home of Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert late Monday night into Tuesday morning.  Many materials were removed during the hours long raid.

Investigators refused to elaborate on what they were looking for or what they found. The search warrant is sealed.  All of it stems from an investigation that began two years ago.

"Right now the mayor is a suspect," said Lieutenant Michael Shaw.  "He is somebody that we're looking at."

A suspect and a sitting mayor accused of public corruption -- it's a story we've seen before, but this time it's in Romulus.

"We went over to the Romulus mayor's house.  He was interviewed.  During the interview process, a search warrant was sought for his home," Shaw said.

"The Romulus mayor was very cooperative during the investigation.  He did speak with the detectives out there.  He's not in custody."

"Romulus is a great place.  [There are] a lot of great people here.  My heart goes out to those that are hurting, and I just ask that everybody prays for the family and those involved," City Treasurer Stacy Paige said as she arrived for work at Romulus City Hall on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the mayor was a no show.

State police told us this public corruption investigation has nothing to do with another ongoing case involving the former police chief, his wife, and several officers.  That case involves the alleged misuse of $100,000 in drug forfeiture funds reportedly spent on drugs, alcohol and prostitutes.

"This is a public corruption investigation that our detectives are working on, but the two are not related," Shaw remarked.

Shaw said the evidence collected Monday night and Tuesday morning will be processed and a warrant will be presented to the prosecutor or the state attorney general.
