Rats -- many people cringe at the very thought, especially near food. Well, that's the situation at Plant City High School. The school just closed down the kitchen cafeteria Monday after discovering a growing rat problem a few weeks ago.
"They're disgusting," one student commented.
Rats not only freak people out, but they can carry disease. They have been known to harbor e. coli, salmonella, and the bubonic plague. If their feces is infected with a certain type of bacteria and you breathe it in, you can develop flu-like symptoms.
In short, rats are a health hazard.
The Hillsborough County School District says the rat problem is a minor one that will be taken care of by the time the kids get back from the long Easter weekend on Monday.
An inspector for the Hillsborough County Health Department, who checks the school's cafeteria kitchen twice a year, says it has never had a problem, and that he would eat there.
The kids will be dining there as well, but not until the rats stop doing it.
