Phillip Kornell, a history teacher at Tampa's Chamberlain High school for the last year, is now off the job. The 40-year-old is accused of trying to have sex with a 14-year old.
"All of these people, if you think about what they do and some of their positions within our community, it should be shocking to everybody," Manatee County Sheriff Brad Steube said
Deputies busted Kornell and dozens of other men in an internet sex sting.
Undercover video shows how it worked.
The men thought they were going to have sex with a 14-year-old they met online.
But it was really an undercover detective pretending, so when they showed up at the door, they got busted.
Detectives say some of the men brought booze, pot, guns and condoms to the house.
"I was at the house when one of the arrests was made and when the guy was brought in and placed under arrest, he kept saying 'I thought this was a joke. I thought this was a joke.' Well, you thought this was a joke? So you drove all the way over here to see if this was a joke? Yeah, there are some pretty sick people out there," Steube said.
He said the men they arrested come from all walks of life, including a nurse, a children's choir leader, a Department of Defense worker, and Kornell, the Chamberlain High history teacher.
After his arrest, Hillsborough County school leaders sent out automated calls to parents, and told Kornell not to come back.
"It's always disappointing when you hear about it, and it's a teacher," School district spokesman Steve Hegarty said. "There were a lot of people arrested in Manatee related to this sting. I don't know what the other ones do, but it's disappointing when you see a teacher among them."
