IRS spends $60,000 on Star Trek parody video

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

They boldly went where no government agency should ever go. The IRS produced a Star Trek parody video, and it's another example of taxpayer waste that may send you into orbit.

Bureaucrats played Star Trek on company time, made the movie with your money, then claimed it as a legitimate business expense.

The IRS produced the video back in 2010 for an agency leadership conference. It also made another one with IRS workers acting out scenes from Gilligan's Island.

They appear to have little training value, and they cost taxpayers $60,000.

The IRS just acknowledged the video was a mistake, that it's made changes, and that a video of this type would not be made today.

Collecting taxes is still its prime directive.
