Lightning announce new head coach: Jon Cooper

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Aggressive, in your face, tough. That's how Jon Cooper describes the teams he coaches to Sports Illustrated's Stu Hackel.

That's the style of game that Cooper is ready to bring to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Bolts will introduce Cooper at a news conference on Wednesday as their new head coach.

Cooper is very familiar with the Lightning. He coached their future stars at the team's development camp this summer in Brandon.

Cooper is 45, with a long track record for grooming young talent. He began his career in youth hockey and has won at just about every level, including leading the Lightning's minor league AHL team to the Calder Cup Championship last season.

He graduated Hofstra College with a degree in business, and practiced law full-time while coaching high school hockey part time.

Cooper says he's not players' coach or a disciplinarian. He describes himself as a mutual respect coach.

Cooper will be reuniting with eight players he's already coached at the minor league level.
