St. Pete detective’s car stolen, found in lake

Posted: Updated:

A St. Petersburg detective's unmarked police car was stolen and later found abandoned in Lake Maggiore.

Whoever took detective Matthew Furse's police car also broke into his personal vehicle at his home. The unmarked car was found halfway submerged in Lake Maggiore, and all of his weapons inside were gone, too.

Furse said he had a Glock .45 caliber handgun, a Colt AR 15 rifle, a portable radio device and ammunition – all which were taken from the trunk.

A passerby in the area notified police around 7:30 a.m.

Police believe whoever did this broke into the vehicle, drove it to a nearby location, removed the guns and ammunition from the car and then drove it into the lake.

The view from SkyFOX Monday morning showed the car about 10 to 20 yards from the shoreline off Boyd Hill Nature Park.
