A 30-year-old registered sex offender was arrested by Pinellas County Sheriff's deputies for assaulting a child.
Edwin Esmurria was booked into the Pinellas County Jail where he is being held without bond pending his first appearance before a judge. He is facing one count of sexual battery on a child under the age of 12 and two counts of simple battery.
The suspect served five years in state prison after he was convicted on a lewd/lascivious battery charge in Pinellas County in 2007.
According to a Pinellas County Sheriff's Office report the suspect is a transient. The incident occurred early Saturday morning at a residence near Largo.
Investigators say Esmurria was visiting a friend in the garage of the home when the friend went inside the home to converse with a female resident.
At approximately 4 a.m. the suspect got into a bed at the home that was occupied by a child. That is when investigators say the sexual assault occurred.
The victim's sibling, who was also in the bed, saw what was going on and went to tell an adult. The child's mother came into the room and a physical altercation between her and the suspect occurred.
Esmurria and the woman were separated and he fled on foot. He was eventually apprehended by deputies and arrested.
Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
