ATHENS, Ga. -

Luminaries were lit on Friday to mark the second anniversary of the death of an Athens-Clarke County police officer.

Officer Elmer "Buddy" Christian was shot and killed and Officer Tony Howard was injured during a search for carjacking suspect Jamie Hood.

A service was held Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park in Athens. Friends, family members and other well-wishers gathered to remember the fallen officer.

"It's been two years and it's just as painful today as it was the very first day," said the officer's father, Buddy Christian, Jr.

Buddy Christian's wife and two children were the first to light luminaries at the foot of the memorial a few yards from his grave .

Christian's father, Buddy Christian, Jr., said that after his son's death, a foundation was created in his son's name. He said that the Buddy Christian Foundation is aimed at making police officers all over Georgia safe.

"We want to help make the police cars safer and make sure that the police officers have the proper safety equipment and can respond at times like this when a fellow officer is shot. Make sure they have the right trauma gear in their car so that they can assist in those crucial moments before the ambulance arrives," Christian, Jr. said.

The fallen officer's father said that he will let the justice system run its course in the case of Jamie Hood. He said that he will attend every court proceeding of Hood until it comes to a conclusion.

Buddy's widow, Melissa Christian, said that she hopes to expand the Buddy Christian Foundation in the future to help as many Georgia police departments as she can.
