U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base has a new commander.

During the change of command ceremony Friday, General Lloyd Austin III took the reins. He's the first African-American to lead Central Command.

In his 37-year career with the Army, he oversaw the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq.

The new secretary of defense, Chuck Hagel, spoke at the ceremony and said he was confident in Gen. Austin's leadership.

Gen. Austin succeeds Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis.
