Taser-carrying mall cop Darien Long faces new charge

Posted: Updated:

Taser-carrying Atlanta mall cop Darien Long, who was arrested after a dispute, is facing another battery charge.

Long was granted a $2,000 bond by a Fulton County judge on Friday, but later in the day another battery charged was filed against him in a separate incident.

Long was stoic as he faced a judge at Fulton County jail. He walked in court a subdued man in chains. He had scratches on his face, possibly from the tussle he had with the man he's accused of tackling, which brought on the battery charges against him.

Atlanta police say Long was arrested on Thursday after allegedly tackling a Metro Mall occupant. Long claimed that the victim had been previously warned not to return to the mall, according to Officer John Chafee of the Atlanta Police Department. However, police said that Long could not produce anything to back up his claim.

Long shook his head as a court officer read off a list of previous charges against him. They include four arrests for assault, two weapons possession charges, and driving with a suspended license.

The judge also told Long to stay away from the victim, the man he's accused of tackling, or he could face stalking charges.

Long gained a worldwide following for the Tasing videos he released online. Fans even donated more than $23,000 so he could upgrade his security gear.

But Marcus Purnell claims Long Tased him unprovoked in a recent incident because the security guard thought he had something to do with a break-in at his home. Purnell said that he's glad to see Long behind bars.

"I was ecstatic about the whole situation. I'm really glad he's arrested. And hopefully he will get new charges today brought upon by me as far as him Tasering me," Purnell said.

Authorities said that Purnell's case is still open because he hasn't filed a formal complaint.

Long will appear in court on Saturday for the latest battery charge.

Long asked the judge for a probable cause hearing in the complaint filed on Thursday. His next court date is set for April 4 in that case.
