Polk doctor charged with prescription fraud

Posted: Updated:

The Polk County Sheriff's Office arrested a Lakeland doctor Thursday, accusing him of writing illegal prescriptions for oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Sheriff Grady Judd held a news conference to announce the bust, and said deputies took Dr. Aaron Roush into custody at his facility, called Uforia Medical Spa.

"He's a bad guy. This guy is a dope dealer," Judd said. "Why in the world he's practicing medicine, we don't know."

The sheriff said this was the result of a months-long investigation that involved prescribing large amounts of narcotics, often in high doses, to undercover detectives posing as patients.

Judd said Roush even made advances on his undercover deputies.

"He told the one undercover, well why don't you come sit on my lap while we look at your MRI?" Judd said.

Investigators seized patient files at Roush's clinic; Judd said some of those people could also face charges.

"If you've been coming to this doctor just to get narcotics, he's out of business and you're going to be out of business too," he said.

As deputies drove Roush to jail, a friend of one of his patients watched in disbelief and said she's concerned deputies are over-reacting.

"It's terrible. [I know] people that are getting hurt, that's hurt real bad, what do they do about that?" said Connie Moore. "He's nice. He's a very nice person."
