Police are warning businesses along Buford Highway in DeKalb County to be on the lookout for imposters posing as fire marshals. Authorities say it's a ploy to steal money from unsuspecting business owners.
Officials say that imposters have targeted businesses in the Buford Highway Corridor over the last few months.
They are apparently identifying themselves as fire inspectors and asking for cash for an inspection.
Some of the targeted business owners have reported the fraudulent behavior to police.
Inspectors will always be in a marked county vehicle; inspectors will wear a DeKalb County uniform and have a badge and county identification. Most importantly, officials say a real inspector will never request payment for an inspection.
Anyone who thinks an imposter has approached them should call 911.
