Boaters injured after hitting channel marker

Posted: Updated:

Two men were injured when a boat apparently hit a channel marker in the waters of the Egmont Channel this morning.

The small pleasure boat hit channel marker 19, which is just off the southern tip of Fort DeSoto in the busy channel shared by recreational boaters and large cargo freighters heading in and out of the Port of Tampa.

The driver of the boat said he looked down for a moment and then hit the marker.

The view from SkyFOX showed the damaged boat being towed to shore.

"We had another bystander, which is always nice when the public is out and about because they had a much smaller boat, that gave us the ability to go out to them, and then we got their boat started and brought the injured guys to deeper water," Lt. Rick Leprevost of St. Pete Fire and Rescue said. "Then we could use our bigger boat and transport them over."

Both men are from Michigan and suffered head and facial injuries.
