Medical marijuana advocates gathering money, influence

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

If you live in the Tampa Bay area and own a TV, odds are you know who John Morgan is, and you've heard the slogan: "Morgan and Morgan - for the people."

John Morgan's law firm has been informing the public that they are "for the people" for years. Now, it looks like he's "for" something else - medical marijuana.

"I don't think there's any way to state how big it is for People United for Medical Marijuana," said Ben Pollara, campaign director for People United for Medical Marijuana.

The organization says Morgan decided to get involved weeks ago.

Their goal is to get enough petition signatures to get the medical marijuana question on a statewide ballot in 2014.

"It takes a lot of time, resources and it takes a lot of money to get a citizens initiative on the ballot," said FOX 13 political editor Craig Patrick.

It also takes more than 600,000 signatures.

Morgan has said he wants to put his name, money and political influence behind the cause for personal reasons.

While his father struggled with cancer, he says marijuana was the only thing that would help.

That's a reality Robert and Cathy Jordan know far too well.

"We have exhausted all pharmaceutical products," said Robert Jordan.

The pair made news when their Manatee County home was raided in February for the marijuana Cathy uses to treat her Lou Gehrig's disease, something she's battled for more than 20 years.

Now, State Senator Jeff Clemens has sponsored a bill bearing her name to legalize medical marijuana.

While that bill sits in committee in Tallahassee, the Jordan's say they are happy that someone like Morgan is fighting for their cause through other channels.

"A lot more people are on our side than before.  A lot more people are speaking up," said Cathy Jordan.

Patrick says John Morgan might be the right person speaking up for medical marijuana activists all over the state.

"It gives this campaign a much better chance of getting the names they need and the votes they could possibly need, 60 percent to get this passed," said Patrick.
