A neighborhood in Spring Hill was awakened by gunshots and police activity Monday morning, as negotiators tried unsuccessfully to coax a barricaded man from inside his home.
Homes around the Berkeley Manor subdivision were evacuated out of precaution, and the sheriff's office said school buses were re-directed as well.
The neighborhood is located in west Spring Hill, just east of U.S. 19 and the Weeki Wachee Preserve.
Gunshots were fired from inside the home at some point before deputies arrived this morning and a standoff began.
When deputies entered the home after 3 p.m., they say they found the man dead. They identified him as James Matthew Soard, 39.
The sheriff's office says Soard's mother chose to remain in the home during the nearly 12-hour standoff. She was helped from the home by SWAT team members after Soard killed himself.
