TAMPA (FOX 13) -

On March 15, 1988, a worldwide brand was launched. And today, Outback Steakhouse celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first restaurant -- the one in Tampa on Henderson Boulevard.

Since their first order -- a Bloomin' Onion and Chicken on the Barbie -- Outback Steakhouse has grown tremendously. There are now 966 Outback locations across the world, including more than 600 in the United States.

Outback Steakhouse is also the title sponsor of the Outback Bowl and the Outback Champions Series tennis event.

Co-founder Bob Basham said he knows why the company has been so successful.

"We've always put people first," he said. "The people that are involved in our organization over 25 years really have a passion for this business, really understand hospitality, understand quality. They understand about having fun."

Only two of the original employees still work at the first location. They were handed checks for $2,500 during a big reunion on Monday.

The restaurant's founders were also given a permanent building marker. It recognizes the Henderson location at the very first Outback.
