Sergeant Danny Crane told everybody he met that he was a decorated war vet who was wounded on the battlefield. But the truth is, Crane wasn't a sergeant and he never fought for the United States.
The Valrico man never even made it through boot camp. FOX 13 exposed his lies last year, and Thursday he was sentenced in federal court for fraud because he scammed Veteran Affairs, as well as a non-profit group set up to provide free vacations for qualified veterans.
Crane accepted a $3,000 trip to Hawaii. Judge Virginia M. Hernandez Covington called Crane's actions "pretty low." She sentenced him to one year in prison and three years of probation. At the sentencing hearing, Crane apologized and said he intends to pay back the money for the vacation after he gets out of prison.
