A soldier from the Tampa Bay area has been killed in Afghanistan, according to his family.
Zack Shannon of Dunedin died Tuesday while serving our country. His brother posted news of his death on his Facebook page.
The Department of Defense has not released details of his death. Shannon worked on UH-60 Black Hawks. He graduated from Dunedin High School in 2010 and was a member of the ROTC.
"Zack died doing what he loved," said neighbor and friend Doreen Delcorpo. "From the time he was a kid, he would dress up in military for Halloween. Every single year he was something military. He would borrow his older brother's uniforms and that was his costume."
On his Facebook page, his brother called Zach a great man and great soldier. Zack grew up in a military family. Those family members are flying Wednesday to Dover, Delaware, where his body will come into the country.
Delcorpo said "cars and cars" of family and friends showed up to the Shannon household Tuesday to show their support.
"Zack was a joy," she said. "He would put a smile on anyone's face."
