The local Hooters waitress turned ball-girl says her spring training gaffe seen around the globe was one of the most embarrassing moments of her life, but it's something Priscilla Daughtry can laugh about now.
"I wouldn't say I was slightly embarrassed. I would say I was humiliated," she said Wednesday, reflecting on her not-so-flattering moment. "
It all unfolded at a spring training game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Philadelphia Phillies. Daughtry was the ball girl down the third base line, and the ball was roped right toward her.
It was fair – barely. But she immediately picked up the ball, and threw it into the crowd to the surprise of the outfielding team.
Immediately she said one of the fans told her it was a fair ball, and her heart sank.
"I wasn't even really thinking about it being on TV at the time," she said.
She probably wasn't expecting it to go viral, but it did. News websites from around the country, as well as internationally, have picked up the video.
Daughtry said the Hooters girls always represent the Phillies being in Clearwater, and she's not oblivious to the rules of the game. It just all happened so fast.
"I'm aware of some of the rules of fair and foul. However, in this case, I just didn't realize it was a fair ball," she said. "I was just thinking that I need to catch it and it was coming straight toward me."
