Officers hit by fleeing driver

ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -

A suspected intoxicated driver rammed three St. Pete police officers last night while they were at the scene of another accident.

Police say they were directing traffic at the intersection of Neptune Drive and Beach Drive SE on Coquina Key after a car hit a pole and knocked power lines down into the street.

That's when a car sped into the area before slamming on its brakes. An officer went up to the driver and said he could smell marijuana coming from the car.

When two other officers came over to help out, the driver put the car in gear, hitting the officers. Officer Brian Prest, 41, suffered a mild concussion and was released this morning after being hospitalized overnight.

The two other officers were not badly hurt.

A passenger from the car, identified by police as 26-year-old Donald Callaway, was charged with possession of marijuana.

Police are still looking for the driver, who took off after hitting a nearby Fire Rescue truck. Officers have not released his identity.
