Ron Glass and a group of Boy Scouts were ready for a night of action on the ice Thursday night.
"We pooled together and had 12 tickets to the Lightning game," said Glass.
Earlier this year, Glass and four other Boy Scout dads handed in guns as part of the Hillsborough County gun buyback program. They got vouchers good for two Lightning tickets each, and took their seven scouts to the game.
Everything was going according to plan until they got to the ticket window.
"We heard the sales agent say we have no more tickets for the vouchers," said Glass.
Since Thursday's Lightning game against the Winnipeg Jets was a sell-out, there were limited tickets available that could be redeemed by vouchers.
Glass and his crew were out of luck.
"I was feeling, in addition to being very embarrassed, frustrated," said Glass.
The 750 vouchers that Hillsborough County gave away during February's buyback were good for one of two specific games -- and they were both sellouts.
The fine print on the front of the ticket actually says that they are: "Subject to availability, while supplies last," and even suggest redeeming the tickets 48 hours before the game.
The sheriff's office say they regret Glass having a bad experience but say they don't think this paints the program in a bad light.
"We've had some really positive feedback from everybody involved, recipients of the vouchers, and this is first incident, tell you the truth, that I've heard where someone was turned away," said Major Sankar Montoute of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office community outreach division.
For their part, the Lightning issued a statement offering a solution: "We are sorry Mr. Glass and his party did not receive the experience they had hoped for last night, but we are pleased that he and his group can redeem their vouchers and come back for another event at the Tampa Bay Times Forum in the very near future."
While Glass and his crew didn't have the night they expected Thursday, they're excited to give it another try.
"It is good to see Tampa Bay step up and make this right," added Glass.
