Bartow mom brought gun to school, police say

BARTOW (FOX 13) -

It was supposed to be a typical parent-teacher conference Wednesday morning, until a teacher noticed something seemed to be sticking out of Lisa Palmes' waistband.

"She was concerned because she thought the parent had a gun," said Principal Angela Gordon.

Police say it was in fact a firearm: a .38 caliber handgun loaded with seven rounds. The teacher quickly alerted a school resource officer. He went straight for the guidance office and was able to take it away from Palmes.

"When I was talking to her, she simply stated she forgot she had a firearm with her," said Detective Sergeant David Wyant.

School officials say the meeting was never confrontational. Palmes did show a concealed weapons permit, but that still doesn't allow a carrier to bring one to a school. She apparently told police she keeps the gun for protection.

As the resource officer investigated further, officials say he found more items that should never be brought to a school.

"He search her purse located a stun gun and powdery substance that later tested for methamphetamine," Sgt. Wyant said.

"Your first reaction is here? But today you can't be too careful," said Gordon.

Gordon says in the wake of recent bouts of gun violence her staff has taken extra steps to ensure the safety of the nearly 900 6th, 7th and 8th graders.

She's pleased with the way this incident turned out.

"I'm very appreciate the teachers are looking and noticing things that don't seem right, because that's the only way we're going to be able to prevent disasters," she said.

Alerts were sent to parents as well as faculty and staff. Officials don't believe any students were in danger.

Palmes now faces several drug and gun possession-related charges.
