Student brings medical marijuana 'candy' to school

Posted: Updated:

An 8th grade female student has been suspended for passing out medical marijuana "candy" at school.

Officials at Pendergast Elementary School became aware late Monday afternoon that a student had been handing out hard red "candy" to classmates.

During a follow-up investigation on Tuesday, the 14-year-old was found to be in possession of one piece of the "candy," which was marked "for medicinal purposes only."

After meeting with police officers and the student's family, administrators decided to suspend the student for 9 days.

It's not clear how many students received the "candy" and if anyone consumed it. The candy is undergoing testing to see if it does in fact contain marijuana, said Phoenix Police Officer James Holmes.

Holmes added that not all of the students involved were cooperative -- while some admitted to receiving the candy, some denied it.

It is also unknown where the student obtained the product.
