There's a new rage in gun ranges in Land O' Lakes: Tampa Bay Sporting Clays.
Owner Mike Mezrah calls it golf with guns.
"I think it's one of the fastest growing sports around. It's fun and you know, with everything going on in the gun industry, it's just been kind of nuts."
Mike stresses safety and fun.
"Once you get it, you're done. I mean I've got little 11-year-old kids who come out here their first time and after about five or 10 minutes they're like, pull it, ready, 'bang.' And they're shootin' and you're like, 'Wow, are you kidding me?' You're gonna see, you're gonna get hooked. It's crazy."
After Mike teaches me shotgun etiquette -- how to hold and load the gun, how to aim and fire -- I hit my very first clay. Yes, I am hooked.
When I miss my first target, then I really am crazy, determined to keep firing until I crush that clay -- and I do.
Alan Phillips hits the three sporting clays courses here every Wednesday -- 300 acres of tall trees and a couple dozen shooting stations.
"We don't keep score. We're not real good shooters, but good enough, and we have a good time talking about everything -- business, kids, family, stuff like that," he said.
So it is like golf with a gun?
"Oh, it is," he said. "It's a lot of fun."
Mike Mezrah runs charity fundraisers and corporate teambuilding events at Tampa Bay Sporting Clays.
Once people try this, they tend to keep coming back.
"When they come. they're happy. When they leave, they're happier."
