ATLANTA -

Atlanta police say a 17-year-old girl accidentally shot herself outside of Grady High School on Wednesday morning, causing the school to go on lockdown for over two hours.

Police say the shooting occurred at around 9:40 a.m. They say the student, identified by Atlanta police as Morgan Tukes, was between buildings of the campus, and not inside, when the shooting happened. They say they do not know why the student was on the campus with the gun.

Atlanta Public School officials say Tukes entered the Grady High School clinic with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to her left thigh, and was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in stable condition. They say a school instructional coach rode with the student to the hospital.

APS Superintendent Erroll Davis says the student was shot in the courtyard between the gym and the main building. He says the girl told them she arrived at school late and did not go through the school's metal detectors. Davis indicated that some students may have let her in through a gym door.

Atlanta Public Schools tweeted that there were no reports of any suspects on campus, and that the gun was confiscated.

A student tells FOX 5 the gun may have been in her pocket when it went off. Another student says he heard a "pop," but didn't think anything of it at the time.

APS said that classes resumed their normal schedule at noon.

Atlanta police said that Tukes has since been transported to Fulton County Jail and charged with carrying weapons within a school safety zone, reckless conduct, possession of a pistol by a minor and disruption of a public school.

Police say the incident remains under investigation. They say they will be working with school detectives to determine why the gun was on the campus.

No other students were injured in the incident.
