Investigators say a chilling story explains why a Nissan Altima crashed through a fence, flipped over, and almost went through a house in Tampa Wednesday morning.
The woman behind the wheel lived a real-life nightmare, according to investigators, at the hands of her estranged husband Alexis Testa-Yero.
The Hillsborough Sheriff's Office says Testa-Yero was hiding in his wife Tania Martinez' car. They say he strangled her with a rope, while she was driving to work. The car ended up on the front lawn of a house on W. Paris Street and N. Hesperides.
A neighbor, who asked not to be identified, caught the first glimpse of the terror.
"I saw the rope," said Testa-Yero. "And it looked to be somewhat the thickness of a clothes line."
Martinez was on her way to work. Investigators say she had no idea Testa-Yero was in the back seat until he began strangling her with a rope. It was so tight, Martinez passed out. Deputies say Testa-Yero ran.
FOX 13 spoke to Tania's father Umberto Lujan. He says the couple is separated and having problems. Lujan says he had to step in, as Tania's father, and demand respect from Testa-Yero. He says his daughter has been staying with her father lately and that his son-in-law wanted to force her to stay in the relationship.
The Sheriff's Office has a warrant for Testa-Yera's arrest on an aggravated battery charge.
"She has marks, but didn't want to go to the hospital," said Lujan.
He added that she did go to court, however, to ask for a restraining order.
Wednesday afternoon, investigators were still looking for Testa-Yero. Lujan said his daughter was nervous.
